SA 8000:
The Social Accountability Standard "SA 8000" for
companies was created 1998 by the Council for Economic
Priorities (CEP) - a > Non-Governmental Organization
(NGO). It is the first international social accountability
standard. SA 8000 is a way for retailers, brand companies,
suppliers and other organizations to maintain just and
decent working conditions throughout the supply chain. The
SA 8000 standard and verification system seems to be a
credible, comprehensive and efficient tool for assuring
humane workplaces because it includes:
- A standard that
covers all widely accepted international labour
rights.
- Factory-level
management system requirement for ongoing compliance and
improvement.
- Independent, expert
verification of compliance: Certification of facilities by
auditing bodies accredited by Social
Accountability
International (SAI).
SAI accreditation ensures that auditors have the procedures
and resources needed to conduct thorough and objective
audits. There are currently nine organizations only
accredited to do SA 8000 certification.
- Involvement by all
stakeholders: Participation by all key sectors, including
workers and trade unions, companies, socially responsible
investors, non-governmental organizations and government, in
the SA 8000 system. Such participation is required with the
Advisory Board, drafting and revision of the standard and
auditing system, conferences, training, and the complaints
system.
- Public reporting: SA
8000 certified facilities are posted on the SAI web site.
Companies that join level two of the SA 8000 Corporate
Involvement Program (CIP) release annual progress reports
verified by SAI.
- Harnessing consumer
and investor concern: The SA 8000 Certification and
Corporate Involvement Program help consumers and investors
to identify and support companies that are committed to
assuring human rights in the workplace SA 8000 Standard
Elements.
Since the SA 8000
system became fully operational in 1998, there have been
certified facilities in 30 countries on five continents and
across 22 industries only. This isn't enough. How can all
companies in all countries be forced to implement this
Accountability Standard?
Social Democratic
Parties support the implementation of the SA
8000.

Social
Democracy
Social-democracy is the name
for an international democratic socialist movement which has
a vision of a fair and human social order in a strong state
based on just distribution of resources and employment,
sustainable economic and ecological growth, equality of
women and men, and non-violent relationships. This vision is
not an ethereal dream, but is instead a realistic goal for
daily political work. Social-democrats do not refer to >
Marxism, and "socialist" parties in "Latin" countries are
usually social-democratic parties. The > Socialist
International' is social-democratic, too.
Socialism
The superordinated term
"Socialism" includes 4 rather different political and

different socialist theories are based - from less
